The NAFA Regional/NCFG Meet will be held at Camp Walter Johnson, which is a Salvation Army Summer Camp that is rented out off season for groups. The North Carolina Falconers Guild has had annual meets there for many years and it is a great location that we can all stay together, is reasonable cost, and located near several local falconers that will arrange hunting spots nearby. 

Game

Gray squirrels are the main game species in the area and will be the most encountered game. There will be some cottontail rabbits as well, but ground cover is thick so dogs will be important for success. These will be the main quarry that falconers can expect.

There is a huge Dining Hall at Camp Walter Johnson that we will use for our banquet. CWJ is located 10 minutes from a small town (Denton) with some good dining opportunities and 20 minutes from a mid-sized town (Lexington) with more dining opportunities and hotels.

The Camp room rates, as mentioned, are very reasonable and are as follows. Be aware there is no TV in any of the individual rooms, however, in Lodge 1 and 2, there is a great room with a large screen tv and basic kitchen amenities including a refrigerator.

• Lodge 1 & 2 rooms - $74 per night per room This includes two full sized beds, dresser and private ensuite bath.

• Lodge 3 Rooms - $49 per night per room- These rooms have two twin beds, dresser, and the bathrooms are shared, dorm hall styled. There are two bathrooms in the lodge.  In the past, we have designated a men and ladies room by putting a sign on both. 

• Parking for all of the lodge rooms is a large lot centrally located as we cannot park all vehicles directly at the lodges.

• Cabins -  $19 per person. These are the camp dormitory style cabins with stacks of bunks around a great room and a large shower and restroom centrally located. In the front center of the building is a single room with two sets of bunks and a private bath that could be designated for ladies. This setup is for the highly cost conscious and adventurous folks. Some of us have used them in the past, but not luxury accommodations by far. This space is more removed from the other lodges, but does have parking right there in front.

• RV Spaces - $19 per night per site. This includes an electrical hookup only, with a bathhouse nearby. There are only a few of these sites, so book early.

Cost for the Regional NAFA/NCFG Meet, that will include a T-shirt, a decal, and a Marshall Davis Meet Print, is $50

Saturday evening there will be an optional banquet for an additional $20 with Gary Brewer as our guest speaker. 

Keep in mind, though very nice, this is not a hotel situation. We have used it for years because it brings us all together with no one else around.

If you prefer a hotel, we recommend the nearby town of Lexington, NC which is 15 to 20 minutes of rural driving away. And there are several hotels there with typical accommodation and pricing. 

Please also keep in mind, because the Camp is a Faith based camp, we have to use discretion in our behavior, especially as alcohol is involved. Flying birds at camp itself must be strictly controlled to avoid bird on bird mishaps. Do not plan to do this without checking with NCFG Officers.

Non-resident Licensing

Hunting by falconry in NC is allowed by two documents. An NC Falconry License ($14) and a hunting license that covers small game. The falconry license can be obtained by proof of licensing in another state, which must be done in advance through correspondence with NCWRC staff member,  Adam Rowe.

 NCFG has worked with WRC to acquire a low- cost opportunity for both the license and a special annual falconry  hunting license that is available to both residents and non residents. The Falconry Hunt License is only $30 and is good for a year and allows you to come back to other NCFG Meets the same year at no additional cost. So cost for a year-long hunting license for falconry in NC is only $34 total.

If you know for sure that you are coming, please try and follow the instructions below by December 1st if at all possible. Because of the process and the holidays, it will insure that everything gets taken care of in a timely fashion.

For out of state falconers, planning to bring their bird(s) to NC, there are a few things worth mentioning. Falconers looking to simply fly their birds will need to acquire an NC Falconry License. Falconers looking to also hunt with their birds while in NC will also need to obtain a Falconry Hunt License.

Ideally, I would like to have everyone taken care of before 12/1. December – February are my busiest months and I would love to be able to get these out of state falconers taken care of in a timely manner.

To obtain an NC Falconry license, please have out of state falconers, who are certain that they’re coming to North Carolina with their bird, please use the instructions below as a guide. Please note that these instructions may differ for mobile users. I apologize that this process is a bit convoluted. The Falconry Licenses have a lot of prerequisites and safeguards within the system, as I’m sure you understand.

• First, if you don’t already have one, please create an account in Go Outdoors. Click Login, then search for yourself using your date of birth, last name, and a third identifier. Click “More Login Options” to change that from WRC ID to the last four of your SSN. If the system cannot locate a record for you, you’ll be given the option to create an account.

• Email me at adam.rowe@ncwildlife.gov with your WRC ID from your Go Outdoors account, as well as a copy of your state Falconry License.

• I will reach out to your state’s Falconry Administrator to confirm that your license is valid and in good standing.

• Once this has been confirmed, I will add the appropriate falconry certification to your record in Go Outdoors.

• After this has been done, I’ll notify you and you can log in and submit the appropriate application. The applications can be found under the “Applications / Regulated Permits” tab, on your customer home page. (on mobile devices, this will be under the Menu button, next to the shopping cart)

• In the application, if you’re given an option to upload documentation, please also attach a copy of your state permit here.

• Once submitted, the application will come to me for review. Once I approve it, you’ll receive an email letting you know that you can now purchase the license.

• The license can be purchased from the same “Applications / Regulated Permits” tab as before. Scroll beyond all the applications until you see the Falconry License under the “Available Permits” section. Add it to your cart then checkout.

If you also plan to hunt with your bird while you’re here, you’ll need to acquire the Falconry Hunt license in addition to the state Falconry License. This license, for non-residents, is significantly cheaper than a standard hunting license. Unless you also plan to hunt using other means, please do not purchase the Nonresident State Hunt License. To obtain the Falconry Hunt license:

• From the main customer landing page, click “Buy Licenses or Obtain Lifetime License Seasonal Privileges”

• Underneath the Annual Packages at the top of the page, you should see four green tabs. Click the one labelled “Regulated Activity Permits”

• The Falconry Hunt license should be roughly the third line down on the list. Add it to your cart then checkout.
