Mews and Facilities

Mews are the birds enclosure. This is where the raptor will spend a majority of its time. With that in mind, it has to be safe, secure, functional and comfortable.

The state of North Carolina has standards for mews design that must be met. Dimensions are 8 ft by 8 ft at a minimum, free of protruding splinters and nails, with at least one window with vertical bars, and a well-draining floor. However, a sponsor may require their apprentice to construct the facilities with additional needs in mind. It would be in one’s best interest to secure a sponsor prior to constructing their facilities.
