Securing a Sponsor

Perhaps the most daunting aspect of beginning falconry is finding a sponsor. A sponsor is responsible for their apprentice for two years and often acts as a lifelong mentor.

Taking someone on as an apprentice is not something most falconers take lightly. Sponsors and apprentices should live close together, get along, and have a relationship built on respect.

There is no formula for securing a sponsor, but here are some tips to help you along your way.

  1. Show dedication- Show up to meets. Ask falconers if you can go with them on hunts or help them trap. Join the state club. Join the national club.

  2. Make the investment in books.

  3. Be respectful.

  4. Secure land access.

  5. Be patient. Expect to spend at least a season in the field with falconers.
